I can understand where people are coming from who say there is no canonical evidence that there was any romantic feelings.
However, in my opinion, there was just enough spark between the two in the movie to give those who wish for the sort of pairing a foundation from which to build upon.

@The Chronicler There doesn't need to be much canon evidence for the internet-ship-machine to do its grim work, but this pairing is natural, as internet ships go. They already had a simple, likeable character to each of them, had loads of chemistry to their interactions, and as the wise Nene-Mitsuharu put it, the "you know you love me" quote did serious work, as innocent as it is. It implies nothing too great, but oh god could the internet light a fire with that spark.
In short, furries and shippers will do as they do, and this pairing makes more sense than some, even most by furry-shipper logic. It tends to result in cute, tooth-rotting, heartwarming bullshit, if you can buy into it for a minute or two.
