This might be the best new comic I’ve discovered online this year. Artwork, character designs, presenting the personalities, storytelling – everything, or almost everything, is on par with such favorites of mine as "Black Label" or "On Full Display". This in spite of the fact that I am not a fan of hardcore sadomasochism.

Not. At. All.

Told in this manner, there were surprisingly many things I could relate to. After all, I do have mild masochistic tendencies, and roleplaying a sadist comes naturally to me when I put some effort into it – so much so that some might call me (mistake me for??) a switch. More importantly, when people’s emotions are depicted this vividly, I’m capable of strongly relating to the characters, like, "if somebody I’m intimate with reacted to my fetishes like that..."

However, when he pressured her into having her clit removed, I felt such extreme pain inside I had to stop reading. My head was filled with how much I fear and hate all kinds of mutilation (including 100% unprompted self-mutilation); and the mere idea that someone might act upon reading this made me want to scream my brains out. The fact that a number of other things present in the story were borderline horror to me did not exactly help.

Afterwards, I’ve returned to some parts of the work, and it appears to be just as good after the operation as it was before. No sign of free fall into an abyss of nihilism, guro, and unrestrained violence, which would be typical of sadist stories, based on my experience.

I’m still not sure whether I can stomach reading it all, but I might. I deeply appreciate the talent of the authors, and at the same time, I think they have created something dangerous. After all, I do doubt whether extreme S/M relationships of this level can function in reality, in the long run. It appears to me that way too many people are too fragile to handle even much more basic stuff. I know for a fact that not nearly everybody who’s into S/M realizes that at the beginning. Heck, many don’t realize they are too fragile to properly handle vanilla relationships!

This has been a valuable lesson. I’m not sure how much this sort of fiction is able to teach about real-life sadomasochism, but the comic has been quite an eye-opener when it comes to pro-censorship mindsets. That could be me!

I hope I’ll be able to defend the right to publish extreme fiction in the future as well. Even in cases where the authors turn out to be monsters in their own relationships. (Just to make my point clear, I have no reason to suspect the authors of this story are wrongdoers of any kind; but even if they were, I would oppose taking down the comic, as much as I oppose burning "Justine" or "Story of O".)
