You actually don't need much. You need just a lot of patience, because nature does it all by itself. Primary forests never needed industrial fertilizers to exist.

To have a good soil you need air, water and food. If the ground is too compact everything, germs, fungi, insects and even the plant roots won't develop normally. Woodchips are an excellent method against that. On infertile/dead lands if you put 8 centimeter thick of woodchip the composting of it after a decade will make a fertile land. This isn't new actually it's a rediscovery by Edgar Guay in the 70s of a natural phenomenon observed in forests and then Gilles Lemieux who tried to understand why it works.
I recommend the books:
Teaming with Microbes.
Teaming with Nutrients.
Teaming with Fungi.
All three by "Jeff Lowenfels".

Note:
You cannot grow into woodchips (well you can but it's inefficient).
You can grow into composted woodchip.
Woodchips will:
-Absorb and reduce water evaporation in summer.
-Avoid frost beneath it in winter.
-Dispatch water more efficiently on a surface.
-Permits insects to create a more aerated/flexible soil.
-Permit the removing of weeds to be trivial because of the aerated/flexibility of the soil.
-Permit the development of beneficial fungi like endomycorrhizal fungi

Note2:
-It takes a month for the soil to be aerated/flexible after the woodchips are added.
-Do not put freshly chipped woodchip on crops. To compost, woodchips need nitrogen, if you do that the woodchips will absorb the nitrogen that your plants will need. Wait a year before spreading woodchips next to the plant that you want to protect. After a year the woodchips won't absorb nitrogen anymore.

Note3: please don't do drugs with your garden, take care of your body and mind and also your family by extension.
