There's plenty of good reason to do that shit besides being ugly or insecure.

For example China's surveillance depends heavily on facial recognition, so throwing it off saves them the hassle of emigrating to a country where making porn is legal.

And just like with traditional makeup, girls might just enjoy using whatever means available to them to pretty themselves up (in line with their own beatuty standards, wether it is actually an improvement is very subjective) even if they're beautiful enough without it.
