@salar

You never play a dragon quest game? They look like pigs in there and I think that's where it came from.

Where THAT came from I dunno.

Salar. Have you ever played Dungeons & Dragons (pen and paper rpg)? I think the first edition was released late 60's or early 70's. Orc's are basically pig men in D&D and D&D is a WESTERN creation.

Orcs were created by Tolkien. His orcs ranged from goblinoid creatures to the mighty, ape like Uruks. Most are likely descended from the first elves captured, tortured, and corrupted by Melkor in Utumno, while the most powerful orcs may have actually been fallen minor Maiar, demigods of the same order as (but weaker than) Gandalf, Saruman, Sauron, and the Balrogs. These are only the most likely origins, as Tolkien leans toward them but leaves the matter unsettled.

Tolkien derived the word Orc from the Old English Orcneas, meaning monster, which also gave rise to a later English meaning of sea monster that fell out of use but inspired the word Orca. Orcneas was itself derived from the Latin Orcus, meaning hell, which D&D used to name the demonic prince of undeath. Tolkien is the first to use the word Orc to describe monstrous humanoids (Orcneas was a word for monster more generally), and the modern concept of an Orc as an evil monstrous humanoid race is Tolkien's invention, though they were inspired in part by traditional goblins. Tolkien's Orcs are more well defined and malevolent than previous bogey man myths, and posses a more complex civilization and are capable of working together en mass towards large military goals, and towards apocalyptic goals under the direction of evil deities.

Some later media built on this concept, while D&D made their orcs a race of pig men, and have swayed between that and a mish mash of Tolkienesque and pig man traits depending on setting and edition. Many modern depictions of orcs split the difference between Tolkien's orcs and D&D's, resulting in a mix of fallen elven and pig man features. Warhammer, Warcraft, Shadowrun, and Elder Scrolls all do this to varying degrees, typically matching pig nose and tusk like lower canines with the pallid skin tones and pointy ears of Tolkien orcs.
