Actually, 'they' are fine!
The last image as far as I remembered is a picture of her holding a baby, her baby, and express a very happy smile.

It's heavily imply that author now have a happy family and no longer have any lingering death wish to express so he/she decide to discard the past and move fully head on into better future :)

It's still a shame to lost such skillful artist but at least they have a better life now I guess.
