It seems that most of these worst case situations come around because they always feature incompetent characters. Weak fighters, or soldiers who aren't willing to sacrifice for the good of the kingdom, or horny bastards that can't keep it in their damn pants. In this situation, why the hell are they all off on their own instead of traveling in a single group, or at least in pairs?
