The mistress of a mansion and the gardener are in an affair. The mistress loves him, the gardener's feelings have subsided/he's grown tired of her. Gardener finds a new sex/love interest in the young maid. He tries to cut his ties with the mistress, who does so reluctantly. When the mistress finds out about his and the maid's relationship, she becomes jealous and angry, and decides to have the maid gangbanged in front of him to humiliate and torment him, then have him killed. Unbeknownst to her though, the monocled bastard that she had enlisted the help of had also been told to investigate the mistress's adultery, and her husband, angered by her unfaithfulness, essentially told him to have her raped until she grew sick of men. The gardener watches both of them get raped for a while longer before getting shanked in the back by the monocled bastard. This much is pretty straightforward I would think.

The flowers that he keeps on talking about are just a metaphor to women and their purity, nothing too strange there either. What I got out of it was that at the beginning, the gardener preferred women who still had some reservedness and chastity in them, but lost interest when they grew overly sexual (i.e. "fully bloomed," fully accepting and confident of their womanhood). Which is why he jumped on the young maid, who was an untouched bud, only beginning to explore her womanhood. At the end, I think he comes to terms with the fact that he was the one who turned them into women capable of reveling in the joys of sex, and realizes the "beauty" of watching a woman fall into utter decadence and pleasure (which is why they also show him getting a boner watching the mistress, whom he thought he'd grown tired of, get raped). I think he refers to the mistress and maid as pearl and glass flowers respectively due to their differences in class, as well as the maid's desire to be like the mistress, like how glass can be used as an imitation pearl. But he acknowledges both of them as separate, unique, beautiful women at the end. Before getting shanked.

Anyone else is free to say what they think the metaphors mean; this was just my cursory understanding of it. It's quite possible that I've misunderstood things entirely.

Brilliant post. I agree wholeheartedly, but I'd like to add a small sliver of hope as a footnote: He was never actually shown to be shanked. The knife was only placed to his back, not explicitly thrust through it. The monocles guy could cut through the rope and free him. Of course, he could also be easily stabbed and gutted. But with the art-style done in such a way to show his bindings from that angle, I'd like to think our gardener will live to seed more fields.

Wishful thinking, or a potential sequel in the works? Perhaps we'll never know...
