It's weird that the comic has the protagonist using speech bubbles and thought bubbles, when he's not talking to anyone else.

Would be better if he just had thought bubbles except when having conversation with someone.

Palmer is having a conversation with someone--there are textual clues everywhere. It is several decades in the future. Palmer is reflecting back and relating his recollections to an unseen and unheard listener, whose place the reader is sitting in and listening along to the story Palmer tells. The blue boxes are his "future comments" as his story unfolds. Who he is talking to and why is revealed at the end of the series. All this should become clear as the stories progress.
