Bootlegs are sadly the only option for those of us who can't attend Japanese fan events and/or can't buy the limited edition goods available at such events.

Japan could end bootlegs very easily if they quit their obsession with "gentei" items and made them available to overseas fans at the same quality and similar cost.

Nearly 150 years and Japan still doesn't understand capitalism, sad!

Oh, no. They understand capitalism just fine. Thing is, most Japanese don't have the physical space to store lots of stuff. Those who do buy fan merchandise tend to be selective about the things they buy. The Japanese merchandising machine has developed in a way which caters to that market, favoring media rentals and limited production runs with quick turnarounds on properties as opposed to the kind of own everything, long-running manufacture we're accustomed to in the west.

And limited production runs means extremely limited quantities and opportunities to acquire merch, which drives up demand. Somewhere out there in the world is a Girls und Panzer 75mm AP shell dakimakura that I will never be able to own, because it was only sold at a certain con in a certain place.
