Its a reference to the manga/anime Galaxy Express 999.

Simplified : In the future, machines rule the galaxy while humanity is slowly driven into extinction. Cue machines realizing that they're nihilistic doomed and start going insane (ie. a literal -screw- realizes it will never be anything more than a screw and commits "suicide" by unscrewing itself and refusing to stay screwed in. Repeat on a literal machine planet-scale.)

And yes, there are sequels but they're all pretty much bullshit.
