Hmm...if I'm reading the afterword correctly, there is symbolism with the fact that this is happening in a field of tall sunflowers. According to the author, sunflowers mean "I'll look only at you" (which may be an adaptation of the meaning of sunflowers in English, that being "admiration"). I know this is sort of spelled out in the third installment of this series, but I felt it needed to be said.
