Its the thought bubbles I'm trying to figure out. Woman is greater than bone, human is greater than dog? Are they still mentally themselves, are they mentally themselves with implanted compulsions e.g. to obey a human owner or are they just two dogs mentally as well as physically? It has an effect on the situation. I can derive a certain amount of satisfaction from thieves trapped as dogs but if they have been effectively killed as there's just a couple of dogs now that makes the whole thing dark and less enjoyable.

I think they're supposed to be arrows, indicating how the dogs are affected by the incense and what they want to do.
