People know the story and the characters like Pinhead from the movie, but the original shortstory The Hellbound Heart is a genuinely good read all on it's own. The book makes the dimension of the Cenobites seem much more mysterious and terrifying than the awkward and somewhat goofy pictures of rotating meathooks of the movie make it seem. There is also a continuation of this story, The Scarlet Gospels. It was written much later by the same author with the intent of killing off Pinhead after studios kept making increasingly awful movies with his characters in them. The story feels downright ridiculous at times, and right out of a Call of Cthulhu default adventure at others. It follows Pinhead going on a Thanos style journey to ultimate power, as well as a gruff paranormal investigator assembling a team of misfits to somehow stop him. It does not have the subtle horror of the first part, instead opting for shock horror and displays of the Christian hell, which is apparently where the Cenobites lived all along. If you like the universe, feel free to check it out, but keep in mind that it will be very stupid and don't come complaining to me when you get to the part where Pinhead fistfights Lucifer (Don't worry, I am making that part up. Or am I?).
