I don't understand why people are defending this. It's a simple matter, taking someone else's story and art then rewriting the story to fit your own agenda is extremely rude to the original work, plus the original creator. There's a certain honor code I feel people should follow, don't take something someone else made and do whatever you want with it. Even if the original creator never knows it's at the very least disrespectful in principle. If you want to make your own story, create an original work of your own, if you need art for it either do your own art or commission someone to do the art for your story. Committing what is essentially a type of vandalism is only distasteful.
