Yup, files are too big, ESPECIALLY for .jpg files.

You should scan the magazine with 300 DPI, and save the files into .png format.

Resolution is fine, but you have to use levelling to remove unwanted detail (like paper texture) to save into PNG for minimum file size at maximum quality.
You can get around 3MB for one 4000x6000 size page if you do it correctly.

Please don't save pages with color, shading or photos as PNG. Use JPG with 95+% quality for that.
