Make zero sense, could have used the app on anyone, not someone close to you in a busy place, it overwrote the poor guy but left alone the bystanders, that guy should be imprisoned and his phone destroyed.
The changes can't be undone so he "killed" the schoolmate.
Only reasons for using on someone is testing the app out or hating that classmate, test is out because he was too fast to apply the changes, used to it or well planned, revenge too is weird, could have done it in a place without witnesses.
In short, the author wanted to do a short nightmare scenario without the intention to go over it.

Is nightmare because I would kill myself if that was done to me.
