In Japanese culture, how you call someone else has heavy implications. Calling someone, an uppercalssman or a senior at work, "senpai" isn't weird at all even if you're close. As you've no doubt seen, moving on to first name basis with someone is a huge step and can be quit awkward at first. That said, the author's intention here, as can be inferred from the author's own explanation of what they were trying to do with this work, is to present the characters as archetypes rather than individuals. Hence, using no names makes perfect sense.
