yeah, idk, the idea of Riamu seemingly and willingly getting into drugs because of menhera culture kinda rubs me the wrong way. I got interested in Riamu's character because I've arguably been depressed for the past few years and my ex was too while I was dating her. And Riamu, or at least the menhera culture, in some way reminds me of my ex.

I thought part of the real point of menhera culture was to show, as a fashion statement, that cute and beautiful people can have mental illnesses and flaws and problems too. That cute and beautiful people weren't simply china dolls to be adored, but that they could have very human problems. ...my ex-gf was like that, exceedingly beautiful (and cute too), both inside and out, wiser and more profound beyond her years for such a young girl, but burdened with a despair that I'd wished she didn't have to feel.

so drugs? I don't know. I drank heavily for a while when I was younger, and played games, chatted around with people, and just tried to do fun and interesting stuff in hopes of "getting myself in the flow" or "inspiring myself" (however little sense that might make). But I barely drink anymore, and now that I arguably might be more depressed than I ever was, besides when this first started, I've come to the conclusion for myself that drugs probably won't help in most cases. Hell, even taking antidepressants for a while and even seeing therapists for a while didn't make my depression appreciably better, just a bit more tolerable. Now, I've figured only a meaningful and loving relationship, self-fulfillment through a more "ideal job," or raising a child might really help me, or some self-actualization that I haven't figured out or done yet.

tl;dr but sure, I'm probably overthinking this a bit for hentai. It just feels weird to me that quite a bunch of Riamu doujins seem to involve drugs.

I only translated this doujin because I love it, absolutely LOVE it, when anime girls do drugs. And, clearly, many other readers enjoy it too. The fact that Riamu is so cynical about being an idol and the fact that her earrings are pills likely have a lot to do with the fact that all the best doujins about her focus on drug use.

Using menhera culture as a vehicle for Riamu's drug use is literally just that, a vehicle. We readers are expected to separate reality and fiction.

That being said, I'm sincerely sorry to hear about your history. There's absolutely nothing wrong with noticing the dangerous implications of a story. But I'm going to continue enjoying watching seductive anime girls succumb to drug use. Because I'm a disgusting pervert.
