Check out our subreddit at r/hentaku and our twitter @hentaku__ (two underscores because I messed up. lol)

We've reworked out patreon, so it's different now. Now 1$ patrons have a voice as well. Check it out at patreon.com/hentaku_ for full details. (Only one underscore this time.)

I've posted a few translations now, and yet I still have no idea the difference between doujinshi and manga.

I guess it is only manga if it says like, "Comic ExE" or something like that?

@ankokublackfang

That's what my assumption is, but then it gets re-classed to doujinshi anyway. So, who know? 🤷‍♀️

Manga are original works while doujinshi are fan works which use characters/worlds/whatever from (a) franchise(s) or works the artist/group don't own.

@ankokublackfang That's just generalization, dojin covers everything from manga to music/video- as long as it's self published.
However, yes, this site just simplify that Dojin=parody, OC=manga.

On this site a short story that's is sold as it's own small book is classified as Doujin. If it's a large collection of stories or if it's originally from one of those collections then it'll be classified as manga. In general this means the commercial stuff will be classified as manga.

A doujinshi is a self-published work usually made by a circle. Practically all works released at Comiket are doujinshi.

@archomp Not true, this site sticks to the correct definition. Most works with original characters are correctly tagged as doujinshi if they're self-published. In the few cases where they aren't it's usually the uploader mistagging unintentionally.

@sunshineandlolipops

There are also the occasional cases where a work was self-published (i.e. doujin), but was later reprinted in an anthology or collected release by a publisher. INSERT (Ken) has a pair of volumes published by I believe Sanwa, and Shoot The Moon (Fuetakishi) has at least one Fukuyama-san story that was anthologized.

Doujin is not the same thing as Doujinshi, though most people mistakenly write as if the two are the same. Doujin is basically a person or group of people, which referred to as Doujin circle, who create Doujinshi. In simple terms, Doujin is the maker and Doujinshi is the product, which could be hentai, manga, game, anime, song, etc.
