The musk clan are martial artists who defeated animals or mythical creatures like dragons using martial arts, then threw them into the same spring ranma fell in, then used a specially crafted magic item to permanently lock them into female form. then married them and created bloodlines of animal eared people with magical attributes.
The fact the musk clan produced a magical artifact specifically designed to permanently lock a victim in their jusenkyo cursed form has implications to this question... on the other hand, maybe they just didn't like the idea of their wives occasionally turning into dragons and tigers and the like.
