Without being an universal advocate for corporal punishment, I do like that this comic contains an explanation of how it's theoretically supposed to work.

Basically that the punishment should be the consequence of wrongdoing on the part of the child- NOT as a outlet for frustration, anger, and/or embarrassment on the part of the parent.

@LordGr4, @Derasit: the best way to use corporal punishment is to make it the alternative instead of the main way of punishment. Like when I was a kid and I did something wrong I had the choice of spanks or being grounded, and because being spanked on the butt is not actually that painful I always went with temporary pain over days of boredom.
