@stegg101 these are surgeon masks, they wear them to not spit or sneeze into patients open wound so yeah you're right. If you are healthy and want a mask you would need one with an air filter and seal so it would stick to your face, like the masks used by painters/sprayers etc.

The point is, Covid-19 starts to spread once you catch it and before you have symptoms. It is too late to put on mask after you fell ill, because you have already pass the virus to others unknowingly. If everyone wear masks, every "silent" patient will be wearing mask, and this help to break the spread. This is speaking in light of experiences in China, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
Of course the problem is there will not be enough masks for everyone. So please stay at home.

@stegg101 Surgical masks don't really prevent you from catching it, but they are helpful to it from spreading further, as @Otto explained.
However, N95/N99 masks are indeed capable of preventing you from catching it.

First of all, sorry guys, I am not really good at English, but I am trying to told you some thing.
If masks are only helpful if you already have a disease and are preventing to spread it, it protects others but not yourself, why do nurses and doctors take masks in hospital? If masks can't help them, they need not masks any more.
Compare to doctors, Mask is more important for normal peopel because the main way weguys get Covid-19 is respirator tract infection.There was a patient in China who got Covid-19, just because he didn't take his mask and contacted with a viral carrier, for just 15 seconds in supermacket. Only he, because only he taked his mask off in that place.
We are not trying to threaten youguys or yours freedom, we just hope everyone can keep health. Man will be very painfal if he gets Covid-19, because Covid-19 attacks lungs. Many patients can't breath without machine. There are many patients asked docter to kill them just because they can't endure this Pain. When docters working, they must take care about both boby and mind.
And if we can't recoover for this krank by immune system, we need go to the hospital. At last maybe a patient needs pay for Covid-19 with 50,00-100,000$, or 200,000$ if he is Critically ill patients. In China, goverment will pay for any chinese Covid-19 patient. But I don't think the same thing will happen in yours country, because ours socal system is diffrent.
Wash your hand, take a mask, and the most important one, stay ai home. Those three simple ways can save your body and maney!

DO NOT tust USA CDC's suggest. Mask is very very useful to help you be safe.
The General surgical mask can help you handle the normal condition, such as street, market, bank and traffics. But if you try to go somewhere contaminated, N90 KN90 N95 KN95 mask is safer.
No mask is very very easy to be infected.
China has many cases before:
One man just talk to another both with no mask for only 15 second and he has been infected in ZheJiang.
In Inner Mongolia, one man just met his neighbor in staircase with both no mask and was infected. They didn't even have a talk.
Guys, stay home, stay calm, stay alert, stay safe, stay alive.

FYI, the CDC is recommended masks now. The real reason why they didn't before is essentially because they know people would rush it like everyone did for toilet paper. They don't even have enough for medical professionals, so they said to don't wear it.
