On one hand it is a case that due to the rape they possess a strong fear of the person who raped them, as well as the implicit understanding that even if you reported it there is still a chance the court case can result in them not going to prison if they had a good lawyer. With them coming to get payback for trying to get them thrown in prison. It might not even get as far as a court case as the rapists may not even get captured by the police.

On another hand it is also a case of reputation. Court cases about rape can wind up becoming very public affairs as news media latches onto it for ratings purposes, resulting in a lot of people finding out about it. This can lead to complications where they can have a hard time finding men willing to be with them, as they had been "soiled" and degraded. Even worse if it is found later that the rape resulted in pregnancy.

Finally, life imprisonment for rape is not guaranteed. Life imprisonment is normally for murder. So eventually the rapists are going to get out of the prison and likely go looking for some payback on the victim that put them in prion to begin with. With potentially even more violent and murderous intentions.

So some victims can wind up convincing themselves that doing what the rapist says is the better option. Especially if they can avoid their family getting attacked by the rapists. This can lead to a rape being covered up for years until the victim can build up the courage or gets enough support from others to reveal what happened to get things rolling.
