He did retcon because the original ending of chapter 1 made no sense looking at how chapter 2 started, it's like he wasn't thinking of making it a series but when he did he didn't read what he had drawn before, so he ended up retconning twice.

Even the first story in the book, read carefully the b&w then the color part as that's the right order, it looks like these are two separate works he decided to put together without tying the loose ends, and it shows.
