It's kind of weird to have the character switch from internal boxes to talking out loud.

Why not just have all of his monologue stuff in boxes?

(The Goat Is Watching)

It is clearer in the first chapter, and should become even more clear as the story moves along, that the premise of the presentation is that it is some years after these events and Palmer is "telling his story" to an unseen and unheard listener (the reader sits in the place of this listener and follows the story as our listener follows it.). Who this listener is and the circumstances around why Palmer is telling this story will be openly revealed in the final chapter of the third and last story of the series. :)
