I don't know Japanese so I haven't read the dialogue myself but from what I hear: The dialogue is supposedly vague enough that it "could" be during the events of the original title so the world hasn't gone full rape-y, but that the events of the game itself imply that its just a mop-up job of smaller kingdoms/princesses. (Again, I haven't read the dialogue myself so I might've just been fed a bunch of bullshit)
